Blame your phone map should you get lost

11 September 2015, 7:37 am

Hikers at the Lake District have been cautioned not to rely on their mobile phones to organize their route on the fells as mountain rescuers in the national park stated their concern about the current spike in the callouts they received. This year already volunteers with the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team in the Lake District was sent into action 44 times, more than the whole of 2014.

They stated that walkers who are not experienced are depending too greatly on electronic maps that is often proving to be useless compared to the traditional paper maps as they are draining mobile phone batteries quickly. The team is urging beginner walker to carry always a paper Ordnance Survey map as well as a compass and to make sure that they know how to use them.

Before mobile phones were manufactured, the only way for most hikers to get help was to wait a bit while a friend or a passerby was headed down to the nearest phone box or farm. But, now some is also seeing their phones mistakenly as navigation tools.

Jeff Carroll, Coniston Mountain Rescue Team’s deputy leader stated that so far they have had 44 incidents for this year. Last year they had for the whole year 43 incidents. He added that it is looking like there is a trend of people who are relying n their mobile phones to get them out of trouble. Those electronic maps are hungry for battery and people should not be relying on them. He also stated should they find themselves in trouble; they are likely to have no battery left to make a call for help. It really is not the safest approach.

Carroll stated that at the end of the day, they are all volunteers and that this is what they are doing. They will help anyone who is in need of their help. Although, getting lost in the hills could cause people an awful lot of anxiety. He added that they don’t want the hikers’ holiday to be spoiled because they are ill-prepared and poorly equipped.
