The world’s best green hotel in SA

27 July 2015, 9:16 am

Cape Town has got the world’s greenest hotel. The award winning Hotel Verde has become the only hotel on the earth to receive a double-platinum certificate for going green from a US authority. Hotel Verde, that is located a few hundred meters from Cape Town International Airport, has got an environmentally aware building management system.

The hotel was given a second LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum Green Building Certificate by the United States Green Building Council, making it the first hotel in the world to get double platinum status. LEED is a green building certification program that is recognizing best-in-class building strategies.

Hotel Verde that is build with environmentally sustainable materials was opened in 2013. The 145 room hotel has got three wind turbines that are producing renewable energy, saving 6 000 liters of water daily and thousands of kilowatts of electricity a year. A plant room is controlling the temperature of the hotel allowing the building to use air that are pumped from 100 boreholes, each one 65m deep. This ventilation system is controlling the heat and coolness of the entire complex which always has got warm water flowing through piping system that is custom made.

The roof and doors are thermally protected, windows are double glazed along with a state of the art braking system which is operating the lifts in the hotel. Inside the hotel, plants are growing from a living wall in the foyer that is helping to keep the air healthier and cleaner. The paint was chosen carefully to be used inside the building as well as the materials for the restaurant’s menu.

Earlier this month, LEED announced that Hotel Verde has received their second platinum certificate, which is the highest grading, after a thorough assessment of the hotel leadership’s management and maintenance of the building as well as their business practices.

Hotel Verde chief executive, Mario Delicio, stated that they are only at the beginning although they are very much ahead of our time. He also commented that the hotel was from a concept about five years ago and the journey to the current international standing was as a result of their team’s clever use of technologies. LEED highly praised the company for their strict waste management and procurement policies, biodiversity and carbon-neutral environment, among other abilities.
